One Car Challenge: Few steps before final

Heading to the final with the contest project.

Finalizing the road material and additional "extend" details for the forest. Increasing Japan vibes with pagoda and some old stairs and shrines would be a good way. If not the rules limitation, I would change the licence plate too.

Separately reworked a Sakura tree model to fit better close up (even though out of the focus). Surprisingly that was quite challenging due to some mess with too high poly blossom models that ate whole my ram. And still, even after all fixes, Sakura became terribly heavy model, around 32M polys. Additionally it slowed down the work with final placing of the tries and branches in front of the cam.

Probably the most annoying and difficult part of the whole project - to place the tries and catch the right position so frame composition, light/shadow on the leaves and shadow on the road, car and forest ground, and reflection of the wet road, will match my plan.

One Car Challenge: Middle

After several sessions, the scene got further updates and deeper detalization.

For better scene mood pronounce, I started to build the light/shadow composition. The main goal is to replicate famous Ing Yang symbol, where the right side will be dark, wet and "thick" zone, left side will be sunny, dry and light, meanwhile the scene union object (almost at the center) will be the car itself.

Reworked the road material and started experimenting with advance wet/drying out asphault.

One Car Challenge: Day 2 and more

In the end of August I had several sessions of work over the project, maybe 3-4 times few hours each.

General updates were camera adjustments - enlarging the camera view, changing angle, work with frame composition, finalizing refboard as the idea reached its final destination. Also some draft precomps.

Rocket Engine Thrust

An exploration into a rocket engine thrust effect simulation in 3Ds Max and Phoenix rendered in V-Ray. An attempt to recreate the feel of colossal energy thrust produced by a rocket engine during its fire tests. Some history tests from the RnD stage are added in the end to visualize the project progression.

One Car Challenge: Report 1 (day 0 and 1)

Through last two weekends project has passed two working sessions.

First - the reference gathering with basic volumes, camera and some written idea notes. Moodboard items.

Second - light adjustments, car paint selection, materials review and couple more main environment shaders.

*** So disappointed with Pinterest, it was so good for a ref hunting a years ago, and now right after the first search type, turns into a sloppy gallery of poor quality Ai images that ruins the inspiration within a minutes.

Space Rover by SpaceX

“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.” - Arthur C. Clarke.

As a big cosmos fan and dreamer about other worlds and future human's space exploration, I made this artwork. One day a human will be roam other planets just like it already happened on the moon. Who knows what we will find there, maybe just an endless emptiness.

Inspired by SpaceX and TiberianSun game universe.

Woodelux / Aluron

A larva, that did not become a butterfly.
The first steps on the next project, are left just as steps without reaching target. Canceled further development gave some unexpected artistic impulses.

Used, as usual for me - 3ds Max, VRay, Fusion. Also some uncertain editing attempts.

Humster3D Challenge 2015 results

Yesterday Humster3D administration published a jury ratings.
As I expected, by the final image quality, I did not pretend for TOP 3 or TOP 5.
But Jeep takes a "Team Choice" mark and got place in top18 among of the marked works.
Anyway it is a great result for my first completed automotive high level work.
Previous auto projects, such as IPB Lambo in 2008 or MonsterMania in 2013, were with much lower quality and could not be compared at all.

Jeep Wrangler

Well well, it's seems that a huge pause appeared here since last post.
Ok, I'll explain. Actually summer was pretty hard, very sad and some times even tragic. So my art works gain some freezing. But! In september, a famous web site and online store Humster 3D announced a new wave of their CG challenge with a theme - automotive visualization. Despite that I am not an auto specialist in CG, my decision was to claim myself there. And in the next minute second problem appeared - wich car to do? LandCruiser already get in moss web and dust same time. After looking closer on it, I realize that to take LC will not to be so fairly and the quality level isnt good for now, for me and for challenge. To be honest, I really dont know what is the future of this old project, but for the Humster I took my lovely car - Jeep Wrangler. After some exploring I found which model I prefer to do - Rubicon 10th Anniversary. It have very nice front bumber and beautiful, for the off road car, rims. So here is the result of my work since september till second half of november.

V8 Engine rig

This hard spring already in past. So lets begin to collect the results! While there is time to take a breath :)

The first will be researching project of full rigged engine, in V8@32 formation. The main goal was to animate some processes inside engine while working.
Considering that engine rpm is extremely variable, animation by keys isn't good idea.
And here is the result of some researching of rig and script animation. I collected some project's shots and mixed it with viewport previews to run them as a short video to demonstrate features.

Program list is short and covers just 3ds max for animation and Eyeone (blackbox) Fusion for compouse project's shots. Video was produced in Sony Vegas.
The model was made by freelancer Denis Korystin also in 3ds.

Hope enjoy to somebody:)

Speeding up

It`s very nice to do something well. But do this in twice speed then others - it is called be a perfect!
So, here is one of cool things to manage your work scene and speed up the process.
Hide/unhide by category panel is well known in "display" deck of the 3ds max window, but what about the hot keys of it?
Сombining [shift] key with the next buttons you will get an hide/unhide effect: [G] - geometry, [S] - shapes, [C] - cameras, [L] - lights, [H] - helpers, [P] - particle systems.

Be smart, be fast, be perfect!
